Warning: Spoilers ahead for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 3!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 3 featured the surprising return of a deceased character: Edward Spellman. Edward was the warlock brother of Zelda and Hilda who married a mortal, named Diana; the couple had a daughter, Sabrina. That young half-witch serves as the focus of the Netflix series and her parents’ past still heavily comes into play despite their untimely deaths. Here’s everything you need to know about the actor behind Edward and whether his character has a future in the series.
Edward became the High Priest of the Church of Night as well as the Headmaster of the Academy of Unseen Arts, the boarding school for witches and warlocks located in Greendale. The warlock had revolutionary ideas when it came to the coven and he was expected to introduce a reformist manifesto. While in power, he met Diana but in order to marry her, Edward had to make a deal with the Dark Lord that involved promising his daughter Sabrina to the Church of Night. After she was born, he signed her name in the Book of the Beast but was unaware that the child was already baptized.
Edward and Diana were killed in a plane crash when Sabrina was still an infant. Zelda and Hilda stepped up to raise their niece in Greendale. The characters briefly appear in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 1 in the form of dreams and flashbacks. The following season, it was revealed that Father Blackwood presumably caused their death to stop Edward from presenting his manifesto, which would have allowed the coven more freedom in interacting with mortals, to the Anti-Pope. The biggest shocker, however, was the fact that Edward wasn’t Sabrina’s birth father. Edward and his wife had trouble conceiving a child, so they turned to the Dark Lord. Lucifer himself impregnated Diana, which meant that Sabrina was technically a Morningstar. Her true identity plays heavily in season 3 as she holds a claim to the throne in the depths of the underworld.
Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina: Georgie Daburas Plays Edward Spellman
Edward Spellman is played by actor Georgie Daburas in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He made his series debut in “Chapter One: October Country” and is considered a recurring character. The actor has made an appearance in every season thus far with his brief cameo in season 3. Daburas broke into acting in 2007 before primarily appearing in short films and TV series. He’s had parts in popular shows such as Supernatural, The Magicians, and iZombie before acquiring his biggest role to date in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Will Edward Spellman Return In Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina?
Edward makes his surprising return in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 3 episode titled “Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Judas Kiss”. After Zelda is shot by Miss Wardwell, she finds herself stuck in limbo. Zelda encounters her sister, Hilda, before the duo are met by their long-dead brother, Edward. Zelda is subsequently struggling with leading the coven and how to reshape their future, so the surviving witches and warlocks could flourish. Edward takes Zelda on a reflective journey into the past and future to push her in the right direction. She comes to the conclusion with the help of her brother that the coven will stop worshipping the Dark Lord or Lilith and will now honor the goddess of magic and witchcraft, Hecate, as the Order of Hectate.
Despite his status as a dead character, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina still has options in how to bring Edward back in future seasons. With visions, magic, and his ability to appear in limbo, the series clearly has plans to include Daburas as the Spellman family’s past continues to unravel. Even in death, Edward serves as a mentor for his sisters and a special figure in the eyes of Sabrina. His role might be limited but Edward’s influence on his family is stronger than ever. Considering he was able to visit his sisters in limbo, it raises the question of whether Edward could find the power to come back to the living realm.
