Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 3 could introduce Sabrina’s evil twin. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 1 debuted in late 2018 and season 2 released in April 2019 (though it was officially considered part 2 of season 1). And now, almost a year later, season 3 is releasing on Netflix. While much of the story is being kept under wraps, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s next chapter sees Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and her friends descend into Hell. Of course, that’s only the beginning of the story, as Sabrina will certainly encounter obstacles along the way.
At the end of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 2, Sabrina and crew defeated the Dark Lord and stopped the oncoming apocalypse, but their work wasn’t quite finished yet. Sabrina’s warlock boyfriend, Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood), sacrificed himself, and is now trapped in Hell. Sabrina has vowed to save him, which means she and her friends will have to go into the fiery pits themselves for the rescue operation. This exciting premise should allow the show to expand on its unique lore of demons, angles, mortals, and the tensions between them, as well as Sabrina’s unique position as someone who can straddle these different worlds. But beyond that, it may reveal that Sabrina - a half-witch/half-mortal - has an evil twin.
It hasn’t been confirmed yet that Sabrina has an evil twin in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but there’s evidence to support this theory. Firstly, it’s been established in other Sabrina versions that the Spellmans all have evil twins. In the classic 1990s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Melissa Joan Hart’s version of Sabrina had an evil twin named Katrina. In fact, all of the Spellmans have evil twins, including Zelda and Hilda. It’s a fun nod to the evil twin trope of classic B-horror that has always been a part of the Sabrina universe. Interestingly, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has even featured some possible foreshadowing in previous seasons.
The show has always focused on Sabrina’s dual nature - from her struggle with her dark baptism to her difficulty in maintaining mortal relationships. And that’s something that could be explored further in season 3. Sometimes, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina takes that duality and makes it literal, memorably in season 1 when Sabrina has a prophetic vision of two babies in the woods. One of them has regular, human feet, and the other has cloven hooves just like the Dark Lord himself. While this scene can be read as purely metaphorical - there’s one part of Sabrina that walks the path of light, the other, the path of night - perhaps it can also be taken literally. Is there a good Sabrina and an Evil Sabrina? One that has lost her humanity while the other retains it?
While Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is definitely taking a darker direction than the previous adaptation of the Archie Comics character, it’s also no stranger to a bit of camp. So while Sabrina’s evil other half could remain a metaphor, it would be exciting for the series to revive the evil twin trope and give it a new spin, as it has with so many other classic horror conventions.
