Actress Cate Blanchett, who played villain Hela in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, reveals she loved Captain Marvel more than her own Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Last year, Marvel Studios marked 10 years of the MCU with such massive releases as Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, the latter of which was the franchise’s first movie with a black lead. Additionally, the studio released Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was the first MCU movie to have a female hero in the title, while this year’s Captain Marvel was the first female-led solo film. All this is to say, more diverse representation in the MCU has been a long time coming, but Marvel Studios is making strides to ensure its films are more inclusive.

For its part, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok was the first MCU movie to have a non-white director, and had a gender and racially diverse cast, featuring Tessa Thompson as Thor’s ally Valkyrie and Blanchett as Hela, the first major female villain in the MCU films. When they hit theaters, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and Captain Marvel were all verifiable successes for Marvel Studios, with the latter two each grossing over $1 billion at the box office. Though representation can help boost a movie’s box office, it also allows a film to connect with the audiences it’s representing. And it seems Captain Marvel even won over a fellow MCU actress.

Speaking to ET about her new film - Where’d You Go, Bernadette - Blanchett was asked about Jane Foster returning as Mighty Thor in the MCU. The actress said she’s excited to see Natalie Portman wield the power of Thor, mentioning Marvel Studios’ only female-led solo movie is actually her favorite of the franchise, even more so than her own MCU movie. She said:

Blanchett didn’t go into detail about why Captain Marvel is her favorite MCU movie, even compared to Thor: Ragnarok. Though critics didn’t all agree, some Captain Marvel movie reviews praised the female-fronted story, especially in how it handled Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) trauma and her journey to unlocking the full potential of her powers. Of course, Thor: Ragnarok movie reviews were also positive, praising Waititi’s humor and the film’s refugee story. Cearly, given their success, both Captain Marvel and Thor: Ragnarok have plenty of fans among moviegoers.

“I’m so, so excited. I’m so looking forward to seeing it, because I absolutely loved seeing them all with my kids. But I really, really loved Captain Marvel. No offense, Taika, but it was probably my favorite.”

But that doesn’t necessarily mean they should be pitted against each other. Every fan will have their own favorite MCU movie, whether it’s Thor: Ragnarok, Captain Marvel or another of Marvel Studios’ 23 total movies. And it seems, out of all those films - even including the movie she starred in, Thor: Ragnarok - Blanchett’s favorite is Captain Marvel.
