One month before the release of Captain Marvel, the first official clip from the film has emerged, with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers fighting a shape-shifting Skrull. Though the clip is brief, it expands on a scene featured in the trailer, showing off the film’s tone, pace, and special effects.

As the 21st movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel precedes the Guardians of the Galaxy storyline - even featuring the film’s villain Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) - but doesn’t explicitly set up that plot. In addition, Larson’s character arc represents a non-chronological origin story. Thus far, Marvel has released three Captain Marvel trailers, all of which emphasize the protagonist’s return to Earth and her relationships with both Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury - the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and Jude Law’s mysterious character, who reportedly could be one of two people: the villainous Yon-Rogg or the heroic Mar-Vell. Earlier this week, a Captain Marvel tie-in book confirmed that Annette Bening will be Supreme Intelligence.

On both Instagram and Twitter, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson posted an exclusive clip of Carol Danvers battling a Skrull. The 45-second video begins with Captain Marvel tumbling backwards atop a train, while a sharply-dressed man - an apparent Skrull - flees the other way. Meanwhile, Nick Fury and Phil Coulson follow the action down below, as they tail the train in a vehicle. Not only does the clip showcase Larson’s athletic maneuvering as the MCU superhero, but also her character’s weaponry, as she unleashes concentrated blasts towards the Skrull and plants her fist downward into the train, thus allowing her to evade a violent collision as she approaches a tunnel. Check out the clip below:

Marvel is releasing Captain Marvel less than two months before Avengers: Endgame, which could be problematic for Larson’s film. Still, the marketing campaign for Captain Marvel continues to escalate, along with speculation about a possible appearance from Genis-Vell, the son of Mar-Vell. The production description for a Marvel Legends action figure originally confirmed that he’ll be part of Captain Marvel. Early screenings have also revealed that Carol Danvers’ pet cat Goose steals many scenes and that his role is perhaps crucial to Nick Fury’s backstory.

For now, the new Captain Marvel clip suggests that Brie Larson won’t be outshined by a cat, and that she’s ready to become the centerpiece of the MCU moving forward. After all, studio head Kevin Feige has been on record that Carol Danvers will be indeed be the focal point of MCU’s Phase 4 and beyond. We’ll just have to see how Captain Marvel’s box office compares to Avengers: Endgame and this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
