Marvel Studios unveils a Captain Marvel Super Bowl TV spot, revealing more new footage from the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The studio is releasing three MCU movies in 2019, and first up is Brie Larson’s introduction as the titular hero in Captain Marvel. The Marvel Comics hero was teased during the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene, where Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sent a message to the hero once he realized the devastation of Thanos’ Decimation. However, Captain Marvel is a prequel film, taking place in the ’90s and explaining how she becomes the comic book superhero - as well as why Fury had a pager with which he could contact Carol Danvers.
Ever since last year, Marvel Studios has been busy promoting Captain Marvel ahead of its March release date. The movie is not only Marvel’s first ever film headlined solely by a female superhero, but the first MCU installment directed by a woman, with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck serving as directors. So far, Marvel Studios has released two trailers for Captain Marvel, and has begun to roll out TV spots. Now, a new special look arrived during the Super Bowl.
Marvel Studios revealed a 30-second Captain Marvel TV spot during Super Bowl LIII on CBS. Like past Captain Marvel trailers, this new TV spot focuses a great deal on the action set to be featured in the movie, with Larson getting some badass moments - both as Carol Danvers and in her superhero form. Watch the new TV spot below.
In addition to Larson, Captain Marvel sees the return of MCU favorites Fury and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as well as Guardians of the Galaxy characters Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Korath (Djimon Hounsou). Further, the movie introduces Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull leader Talos, Lashana Lynch as Carol’s friend Maria Rambeau, Gemma Chan as Starforce member Gemma Chan, Jude Law as the as-yet-unnamed Starforce leader, and Annette Benning as another mysterious character.
Like most Marvel movies, there’s plenty we still don’t know about Captain Marvel, including the true identity of Law’s character. It’s been speculated he could be playing either the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, or the villainous Kree Yon-Rogg, but it’s likely Marvel Studios will keep that particular secret until the movie hits theaters next month. Of course, with little more than a month until fans will be able to see Larson’s introduction to the MCU, Marvel Studios will no doubt continue to roll out more new footage. Though there may not be too many more revelations about the story or characters from the movie before then, fans will be able to catch Captain Marvel soon enough.
