We now have official confirmation that Captain Marvel is set to begin filming in February of next year. It was previously reported that the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie solo-headlined by a female superhero (with Oscar-winner Brie Larson playing the movie’s namesake, Carol Danvers), Captain Marvel was aiming to start filming in January 2018, so it appears that older report was on the right track. The project has long had its star and writers in place, but just this past week Captain Marvel found its directors - in the form of Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind filmmaking duo, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Even as the theatrical release date remains in the distant future of March 2019, fans of the MCU are already getting excited to see Larson take on the lead role in Captain Marvel. In the meantime, MCU fans have the more immediate likes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming to look forward to this summer - though that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios isn’t already planning ahead, with respect to the start of production on Captain Marvel next year.

Speaking to Collider during the press day for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Marvel Studios president and MCU head architect, Kevin Feige confirmed the current production timeline for Captain Marvel; saying that “Assuming everything stays on schedule, we start filming…Captain Marvel in February.” The project shouldn’t have any real difficulties in making that start date either, now that Bodes and Fleck are officially onboard to serve as the film’s directors.

Nevertheless, it’s always important to keep the fact that scheduling for major studio productions in Hollywood can shift and change. That being said, having Captain Marvel start filming within just over a year in advance of its theatrical release should give everyone involved more than enough time to get things together and firmly in place behind the scenes, in order to ensure that MCU fans will be more than pleased with the final result.

Larson has quickly become a go-to leading lady in Hollywood, and if her award winning turn in the 2015 drama film Room speaks to anything - in addition to her supporting roles in this year’s big-budget blockbuster Kong: Skull Island and action/comedy Free Fire - Larson can definitely act. Captain Marvel will likely continue to be the center of significant attention within the MCU, which only makes the build-up to its February 2018 start date all the more exciting for fans to anticipate.
