Warning: SPOILERS for Captain Marvel #11
It looks like Star might finally be ready for round two in her epic conflict with Captain Marvel in Marvel’s upcoming Star #4, the penultimate issue of the miniseries. Their last fight left both women more than a little bloody, but the rematch promises to “cut the deepest”.
For those who missed Captain Marvel’s first showdown with Star, the fight ended with nobody’s hands clean. Star, formerly a successful journalist named Ripley Ryan, had hatched a plot to steal Captain Marvel’s powers for her own through a virus that attached a power-stealing device to Carol’s heart. Whether Ripley did this because she was evil, deeply traumatized from her lengthy time as Nuclear Man’s hostage, or a combination of both is unclear (and will most likely be explored as the mini-series progresses). The fact remains that she committed some pretty atrocious crimes, and at the end of the day, Captain Marvel was forced to go to extremes to save the people of New York.
In a newly released solicit, Marvel shed more light on the “bloody reunion” between Captain Marvel and Star. In the fallout of her defeat, Star escaped death and imprisonment thanks in large part to the Reality Stone. (Yes, that stone.) For this rematch, Star apparently has gotten a little more training, and she will also be facing Captain Marvel with her own set of powers this time around. (Well, at least, the Reality Stone probably can’t be so easily ripped from her chest.) The full solicit reads:
This showdown will fittingly again be in Kelly Thompson’s capable hands. She penned the original, (literally) heart-breaking fight between the two superpowers, and it will be awesome to see her complete a matched set in Star’s series. This time around, Thompson will be working with Javier Piña and Filipe Andrade, the fantastic artists that have helped her bring the Star miniseries to life. Though Carmen Carnero, the artist behind Captain Marvel and Star’s first conflict, will not be drawing the actual rematch, she still got a chance to show a glimpse of her version of the fight in a fierce cover. (There will also be a variant cover by Jen Bartel who is also known for some amazing Captain Marvel art.)

Star’s been on a journey of self-discovery, and with the help of some unexpected teachers, she has managed to learn more about both herself and the powers of the Reality Stone now bonded to her. She’s also still on the run from some of the most dangerous villains in the universe, who will not stop until they wield the Reality Stone themselves. But it’s Star’s second confrontation with Captain Marvel, the woman who killed her, that will cut the deepest. When the dust settles, what will be left of…anything?”
At this point, Star has tried her hand against Marvel’s heroes, and it seems that her mini-series is now pitting her against their villains. Will a common enemy allow Star and Captain Marvel to put aside their differences? Or are some wounds too deep to heal even with a Reality Stone? The Scarlet Witch has been pretty much confirmed to be Star’s teacher, and maybe Wanda can teach her a little about forgiving and forgetting. However, Star has already shown that she is willing to do almost anything when backed into a corner, so a confrontation with her murderer might just push Star (and the power of the Reality Stone) over the edge. The same might be wondered as well about Captain Marvel who certainly has not had it easy recently. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Thompson’s upcoming work on Captain Marvel: The End, releasing this month, could give fans subtle insights into the fallout of Captain Marvel and Star’s confrontation.
Hopefully, this time around Captain Marvel and Star will be able to hug it out with a little less violence. Star could certainly use Captain Marvel’s help against all her newfound enemies. Unfortunately for both women, reconciliation seems unlikely, and instead, fans might be seeing the unraveling of Marvel’s entire reality.
