Captain Marvel gets an unusual endorsement from reality star Kris Jenner. The latest MCU movie will officially debut Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the franchise’s first female headline superhero, before she eventually joins the rest of the heroes in Avengers: Endgame next month. Days before her origin film hits theaters, it gets a marketing boost by getting the seal of approval from the Kardahshian-Jenner matriarch.

Marvel Studios is taking its fans back in time, with Captain Marvel being set in 1995. At that point, young (and still two-eyed) Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and fan-favorite Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) - who were still S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives - were tasked to get to the bottom of the mystery that is Danvers, who’s a member of the Kree elite squad known as the Starforce. Her mission in Earth links back to the ongoing brutal war between the Kree and Skrull -  a shapeshifting extraterrestrial race who are looking to take over the planet. But having no memory of her past, Danvers’ trip will lead to the discovery of her lost history with human beings, making for a unique narrative for a superhero origin story. As the release of the movie nears, an unlikely partnership brings Jenner in to endorse the film in a hilariously weird promo spot.

Posted on Jenner’s Instagram account is a short clip of herself and former Days of Our Lives actress, Lisa Rinna returning some tapes to a Blockbuster branch - the same one Danvers crashes into in the first trailer for the film. The rest of the video intercuts between footage from the film and the socialites’ interaction, until Jenner declares that “what she needs is her own movie” as she pulls up her flip phone, presumably calling some of her friends for potential projects for Danvers. In the caption, the “momager” asks everyone to catch the Marvel Studios movie when it rolls out this Friday ending it with the hashtag “ad,” meaning she was paid for this small bit. Check it out below:

After the release of the above clip, one wonders if there will be any other special collaborations that Marvel Studios has cooked up with the nearing release of Captain Marvel. Larson has found support from her female colleagues on social media as she promotes the film, like Blake Lively, Zoey Dutch and Lena Waithe, but there doesn’t seem to be any surprise ad like this from them in the works. If anything, people are already stoked for the movie, as despite getting bomb reviews on Rotten Tomatoes long before it hit theaters, it’s tracking to have a solid $100 million opening weekend.

Frankly, Jennfer’s video makes very little sense. If Marvel Studios wanted to emphasize Captain Marvel being set in the 1990s, they could’ve gotten someone else who’s the epitome of that era. While Jenner was indeed a mainstay in the LA social scene at that point - having been married to Robert Kardashian and a pre-transition Caitlyn Jenner - it wasn’t until the mid to late 2000s that she made a name for herself by starring in their family’s reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Additionally, it’s also quite jarring to use someone like Jenner - who’s been criticised for exploiting her daughters for fame and money - to endorse a movie that pushes female empowerment. Regardless, fans are still eagerly anticipating the release of the film at the end of the week.
