The newest Captain Marvel teaser, which acknowledges the movie’s release in less than one month, has revealed the Skrull invasion of Earth. As the first MCU release of 2019 a lot is riding on Captain Marvel. It’s Marvel Studios’ first female-led solo superhero movie. It’ll also introduce Captain Marvel before her expected appearance in Avengers: Endgame. Yet one of the continuing sources of speculation for Captain Marvel is its introduction of the alien race of Skrulls.

The Skrulls were created by the late Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four. A green-skinned race in their “natural” form Skrulls also have the ability to flawlessly shape-shift and impersonate any other race from humans to other aliens. The Skrulls coming to Earth and hiding in plain sight is one of the driving forces of Captain Marvel. It could even help inform the future of the MCU.

The new Captain Marvel teaser, which can be viewed below, begins by heavily focusing on Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and her relationship with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Captain Marvel is set in 1995 and it’s the earliest chronological Marvel movie, besides of course Captain America: The First Avenger. The teaser underlines that fact by showing a younger, much more naive Nick Fury.

The Fury who approaches Carol in the teaser is the exact opposite of the character who approached Tony Stark at the end of Iron Man. When Tony met Fury, the one-eyed spy already knew everything about him. Fury was very much in control of the situation. In Captain Marvel, it’s Fury who is on the metaphorical back foot. Captain Marvel even comments at one point that Fury “doesn’t have any clue.”

Carol explains to Fury that she has arrived on Earth to stop the Skrulls who have been “infiltrating” the planet. This line seems to confirm that the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth will be far more stealthy than the Chitauri in the original Avengers. The Skrulls have been on Earth long before Carol’s arrival and slowly taking control. This doesn’t exactly explain why Fury acted like Thor was the first alien that he (or S.H.I.E.L.D) had encountered in The Avengers. However it does hint that Captain Marvel won’t end with a gigantic large scale Skrull battle on Earth. Although there will obviously be some skirmishes as there are more shots of Carol battling a Skrull on a LA train. Most of the big action set pieces will probably take place in space or at the very least just outside the Earth’s orbit, which can also be glimpsed in the teaser.

The stealthiness of the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth also feeds into a popular fan theory. The teaser suggests that Captain Marvel is the only solid source of information on the Skrulls. Carol Danvers is an incredibly powerful character but she can’t be everywhere at once. While it’s likely that Captain Marvel will end with Carol being successful, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for one or two Skrulls to sneak under her radar. This is even more likely if Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. are just as “clueless” as they seem. The S.H.I.E.L.D. of 2008 wouldn’t let a Skrull run free but the S.H.I.E.L.D. of 1995 might just drop the ball. Even one Skrull being left on Earth could end up being a huge problem for the Avengers down the line as they can become anyone or anything, even a fellow Avenger.
