Captain Marvel will officially fly into theaters with a PG-13 rating. There’s only a few weeks left before Marvel Studios will release their first female-led superhero movie, which sees Oscar-winner Brie Larson playing Carol Danvers. As the twenty-first Marvel Cinematic Universe film as a whole, this has been a long time coming and has made the film highly anticipated by many as a result.
Marvel’s been pushing the film heavily as of late, including a somewhat surprising TV spot during the Super Bowl. All of the footage is focusing on Carol’s story of rediscovering who she really is, but this will not be a traditional first film in a superhero franchise. The film’s non-chronological narrative choice to tell Captain Marvel’s origin may signal surprises are in store. Despite the built-in excitement, it has only been recently that the footage has shown some of the classic humor and action that MCU fans have come to expect. The usual MCU flair doesn’t stop there as younger versions of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), and Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) will appear.
The latest MPAA ratings have arrived to confirm Captain Marvel will also continue the MCU’s long-standing pattern of being a PG-13 film. The rating was made official today and has been given to the solo movie for “sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive language.”
Every MCU film released so far has been PG-13, so it was expected that Captain Marvel would follow suit. The action in most blockbusters alone would keep it from hitting PG and there was never a chance this would be rated R. Even though the rating itself is not surprising, this action by the MPAA does confirm that the final cut of the film has been locked. Captain Marvel may not hit theaters for another month, but press screenings will begin much sooner, especially if Marvel Studios is confident that the movie will be a hit.
The box office potential for Captain Marvel already appears to be very high despite not a single reaction or review yet being available too. Previous projections had Captain Marvel opening to $160 million in its first weekend, and such an incredible start may look more likely thanks to the great pre-sale numbers the movie generated in the first 24 hours of tickets being on sale. Box office estimates and ticket pre-sales could climb even higher once the critical response starts to become available and the release date for Captain Marvel draws nearer.
