Captain Marvel appears to be embracing her Kree origins like never before, especially as she takes on the mantle of Supreme Accuser in the latest Empyre crossover - and it looks like she’s not the only one. Carol will have an entire team of Accusers backing her up in Captain Marvel #20, as revealed at C2E2.

Captain Marvel’s Accusers team includes the likes of War Machine, Spider-Woman, and Hazmat. Each member is sporting an Accuser redesign, as well as the Accusers’ signature hammer. How Captain Marvel becomes the Supreme Accuser - and why she is working for Emperor Hulking - remains a mystery. What is known is the Accusers will be sent after a Kree soldier who bombed a city under Hulking’s protection.

The Accusers are the Kree version of military justice. The most famous Accuser is Ronan, who first appeared in Fantastic Four #65 in 1967. As the Supreme Accuser, Ronan boasted the Universal Weapon, a powerful war-hammer capable of manipulating cosmic energy. Ronan would go on to be both an ally and an enemy to the heroes of Earth, largely depending on the interests of the Kree Empire. Ronan himself was ultimately killed by the Inhuman Black Bolt, who discovered the Kree had made him a cyborg shell of the proud warrior he used to be. While it’s not known how Captain Marvel will fare as the new Supreme Accuser, it is known she will wield the very same Universal Weapon.

The storyline kicks off in Captain Marvel #18 by Kelly Thompson and Cory Smith. However, while it might seem like a simple search-and-destroy mission for such an overpowered team, the solicitations state otherwise. Captain Marvel’s simple mission will grow complicated “on a personal level”, hinting that the hunt for this Kree renegade might not be as cut-and-dry as it seems.

It is certainly ominous to see Carol and company dressed as Kree Accusers. The tag line for Empyre is “The enemy of my enemy…,” which raises the question of just who Captain Marvel and her colleagues will be fighting. Could Emperor Hulking be invading Earth in order to protect it from another, greater threat, and just what lines will the heroes of Earth have to cross in order to navigate such alliances? While Carol’s Supreme Accuser role is probably temporary, it seems like what she is being called to do will doubtlessly have an impact on her emotionally as well as psychologically. Hopefully, Captain Marvel and her team can find extract justice from the fog of war that surrounds them.

Captain Marvel #20 goes on sale in May.
