In the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Peter Parker references Captain Marvel - and it’s the first time in the MCU Carol Danvers gets her superhero name. Later this summer, the 23rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hits theaters with Spider-Man: Far From Home - the third MCU movie of 2019 after Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. A direct sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home is actually the fifth appearance of Tom Holland as Peter Parker in the MCU. He was introduced in Captain America: Civil War, then joined the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame also acted as Captain Marvel’s introduction to the modern MCU after her official debut in her solo movie, which was set in the 90s. As such, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) met many of the Avengers heroes, including Peter Parker. Now in the full Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, which includes Avengers: Endgame spoilers, Peter is called upon by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) for a superhero mission. However, after coming to terms with being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in Homecoming, Peter is resistant to the idea, and suggests both Thor and Captain Marvel for the job.

Surprisingly, this is the first time in the MCU that Carol Danvers is actually referred to as “Captain Marvel,” and it’s spoken by Peter Parker. In Captain Marvel, her Marvel Comics superhero name is referenced by Fury when he says “Marvel” is better than “Mar-Vell,” and it’s established she’s a captain in the shot of her plane, but she’s never actually called “Captain Marvel.” Then in Avengers: Endgame, she’s only referred to as Carol.

Presumably Peter did not actually give Captain Marvel that name in the MCU, and it’s more likely he picked it up from somewhere. Perhaps where the name comes from will be explained in a Captain Marvel sequel. Most likely, Nick Fury gave Carol that name since he’s one of the few people able to connect the dots between Captain Carol “Avenger” Danvers and Mar-Vell - plus, he’s the one to say Marvel is better. Of course, it could also be Maria or Monica Rambeau who came up with that name, since they both know as much as Fury, and Carol has her own nickname for Monica: Lieutenant Trouble.

No matter where Captain Marvel’s superhero name comes from in the MCU, it’s incredibly strange that it would first be used in a completely unrelated movie like Spider-Man: Far From Home - a movie that she doesn’t even appear in (unless Marvel Studios has a surprising cameo planned). Of course, Captain Marvel was already an atypical MCU origin story because she didn’t get her superhero name. The MCU has eschewed secret identities since they very beginning in Iron Man, but Captain Marvel is in a reverse situation where, up until the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, she hasn’t had an official superhero identity established in continuity.

Perhaps we’ll get more explanation in the full Spider-Man: Far From Home movie. After all, Peter Parker will be working with Carol’s close friend Fury. But as the scene plays in the trailer, it seems like Peter Parker may be the first character in the MCU to call Captain Marvel by her superhero name. In Spider-Man: Far From Home instead of Captain Marvel weirdly enough.
