Captain Marvel concept art suggests that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) may be a Skrull. The former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a major driving force in assembling the Avengers, recruiting its members since Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) revelation that he’s Iron Man. But he may not be the ally that fans thought him to be if a new illustration from the upcoming MCU film comes to fruition.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel will take fans back to 1995 with the origin story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). Given the timeline, the movie will feature young (still two-eyed) Fury and fan-favorite Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) back when they were still S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. Both will deal with the mystery that is Danvers, who is a member of the Kree elite squad known as the Starforce. At this point, Earth was caught in the middle between the ongoing brutal conflict between the Kree and Skrulls - a shapeshifting extraterrestrial race who are looking to take over the planet. Infiltration has already begun with Skrull leader, Talos (Ben Medelsohn) successfully blending in with people in the agency. But there may be another poser in the movie with Fury possibly also an imposter.

A page from Captain Marvel: The Art of the Movie found on Reddit (via CBR) shows Fury’s Skrull transformation. Interestingly, however, he morphs into the character’s most recent look - with his signature all-black get-up and eye patch - and not his desk jockey aesthetics from the 1990s that he’s sporting in the Larson-starrer. Check out the illustrations below:

Since Skrulls were officially announced to be arriving in the MCU via Captain Marvel, conversations about who among the current roster of personalities may secretly be an imposter have started. It’s difficult to imagine that anyone from the beloved heroes are Skrulls, considering what most of them have gone through in the last decade. Revealing that Fury may be one of them makes it much more interesting since he’s one of the first characters introduced in the MCU, not to mention the fact that he’s been in a position of power in S.H.I.E.L.D. for so long. He’s also the one person that the Avengers have unequivocally trusted. In hindsight, it doesn’t really make sense given his arc thus far, but if this is the case, maybe it’s something that will play a purpose in the franchise’s future storytelling.

Of course, this concept art is by no means a confirmation that Fury will be revealed as a Skrull. There’s a possibility that he was impersonated as part of Skrull’s plans to take over Earth. From a storytelling perspective, it makes sense that they will attempt to imitate him considering that he’s working closely with Danvers, who’s known to be a Kree. That said, the panel using his contemporary look makes it trickier to decipher how this supposedly fits in Captain Marvel’s story given the film’s timeline. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait that long to find out with the movie hitting theaters all over the globe at the end of the week.
