Over the next three years, Marvel will make a sizable contribution to their ever-expanding shared universe by adding eight more films into the MCU. Three of those will be coming this year, in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. Meanwhile, next year’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War have already begun filming, with Ant-Man & the Wasp set to begin this July. 2019’s Avengers 4 is said to be its own beast, but will likely be a continuation of Infinity War. That only leaves Captain Marvel in a state of uncertainty, as not much is known about the cosmic adventure film.

Though it does have release date in March of 2019, along with a pair of writers and a star in Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island), Marvel have said they’re in no hurry to announce a director. Of course, that doesn’t mean they haven’t found one, just that they may be keeping it under-wraps. With the film now two years away, that’s likely to change sometime this year. After all, the movie will likely feature fighter jets, outer space, and lots of cosmic brawls, meaning it will need plenty of pre- and post-production time. Last month, we heard a rumor that the film would unsurprisingly begin filming in the spring of next year. Now, we’ve got an even more concrete answer.

Thanks to My Entertainment World, it looks like January 8, 2018 will be the official start of production for the Captain Marvel film. While this hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel, it falls in line with the necessary time table for the movie.

The report also confirms Captain Marvel will join Infinity War and a number of other Marvel projects in Atlanta, GA for filming. Given the studio’s relationship with the state and facility in the city, this is hardly surprising. A word of caution, however, about the story synopsis. While this reveal would normally be breaking news, the blurb is obviously taken from the comic book bio of Carol Danvers, rather than the movie. While it’s unknown whether the film will introduce the previous Captain Marvel and Carol’s first superhero name, the synopsis mentions she’s spent years with the Avengers. In the comics, this is of course true, but it’s not the case in the MCU.

There are still a number of questions regarding how close the film will be to the source material. Even something as seemingly trivial as Carol’s mohawk has been the subject of fierce debate among fans. We may learn a bit about Carol if she debuts in Infinity War, a strong possibility given its interstellar backdrop. If not, we’ll likely learn more at San Diego Comic-Con this year or sometime during the fall, as the movie heads into pre-production. We’ll not only learn who the director is, but more about the rest of the cast. - perhaps even the confirmation of Samuel L. Jackson’s involvement.
