What can we expect from Captain Marvel 2, now officially named The Marvels? Carol Danvers swooped into theaters, helmet-mohawk and all, in 2019’s Captain Marvel, making it the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first feature with a female lead. And while she made her big return in Avengers: Endgame, there is a lot of excitement for the character’s return in the direct sequel.

Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, Captain Marvel served as an origin story for the MCU’s most powerful superhero yet. Set in the 1990s, she teamed up with a young Nick Fury as she found herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic conflict between the Skrulls and the Kree, who injected her with their DNA. At the end of the movie, Carol flies off to help the Skrulls find a new home, eventually returning more than two decades later to save Tony Stark and help the Avengers defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

The Marvels will see a new director behind the camera, as well as a new screenwriter. It’s also set to feature two new MCU characters, who will be joining Carol Danvers for what sounds like an epic team-up. With production on Captain Marvel 2 having already begun, here’s everything to know about the sequel, including when it’s set to be released, its cast, and story details.

Captain Marvel 2 Is Officially Confirmed by Marvel

A Captain Marvel sequel was practically inevitable, since Marvel solo movies are basically planned as their own potential franchises. The only solo movie in the MCU that hasn’t had a sequel is The Incredible Hulk, and that’s due to rights complications with Universal - something that Captain Marvel obviously doesn’t have to worry about (and will be worked around with the upcoming She-Hulk Disney+ series). At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige finally confirmed that Captain Marvel 2 is happening, with the sequel’s development officially moving forward in January 2020.

Captain Marvel 2 Release Date

Captain Marvel 2 will release in theaters on November 11, 2022, a date that has been pushed back a few times due to the ongoing pandemic and the constantly changing MCU schedule. The Marvels joins several MCU films releasing next year, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The Marvels has already begun filming in Atlanta, Georgia, with production also set to take place in Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Tropea, Italy.

Captain Marvel 2 Has a New Director & Writer

On January 22, 2020, it was revealed that Captain Marvel writer/directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck wouldn’t be returning for Captain Marvel 2. Instead, WandaVision’s Megan McDonnell was confirmed to be penning the sequel’s script, with Nia DaCosta directing the feature. DaCosta most recently directed Candyman, which also featured WandaVision star Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambeau in the Disney+ series and will star in The Marvels. DaCosta’s previous films, including Little Woods, have been praised by critics, and there’s no doubt that she’ll bring some fresh ideas to The Marvels alongside McDonnell.

Captain Marvel 2 Has No Trailer Yet (Obviously)

It would be very impressive if there was a trailer for Captain Marvel 2 at such an early stage in filming, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Stay tuned for updates and watch this space for more information, but fans shouldn’t expect a trailer for The Marvels until the summer of 2022 at the earliest.

Captain Marvel Will Be Set After Avengers: Endgame

Captain Marvel’s 1990s setting was mainly for the purposes of telling Carol’s origin story and officially bringing her into the MCU’s existing canon. It’s been confirmed that the sequel will be set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The end of the first movie saw Carol jetting off on a brand new mission that took her on an adventure through space, and there could be flashbacks that will allow fans to see what happened during that time, but it’ll more than likely focus on the present with only some information about what went on while Captain Marvel was away in space.

What Captain Marvel 2’s Story Could Be

It’s hard to predict what Captain Marvel 2’s present-day plot could involve, as many of the characters from her first film don’t seem to currently be around in present day MCU. It’s possible Nick Fury will offer Carol a new mission to accomplish, and Skrull leader Talos was shown to be on Earth in Spider-Man: Far From Home. With the Skrulls still around in the MCU and Fury’s potential involvement, The Marvels could be used to set up Secret Invasion, which sees the Skrulls shape-shifting into powerful figures in a bid to take over Earth. With the help of the now-adult Monica Rambeau and others, The Marvels might have to defend Earth from another potential invasion. For now, however, plot details are still under wraps.

Captain Marvel 2 Cast

With Captain Marvel 2 set in the present day, Teyonah Parris is set to reprise her role as Monica Rambeau after being introduced in WandaVision. In the comics, Monica gains superpowers and goes by the superhero moniker Spectrum, with the ability to convert her body into pure energy. While she hasn’t been given an official moniker in the MCU, The Marvels could change that and give her more to do than in WandaVision. In addition to Parris’ role, Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani will also be in the sequel, which explains the title. Vellani will first appear in her own Disney+ show as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel before joining Captain Marvel 2. Fans should also expect to see Samuel L. Jackson return as Nick Fury, with Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon cast in undisclosed roles.

Captain Marvel 2 Connects To Ms. Marvel On Disney+

Ms. Marvel will first enter the MCU via her own Disney+ TV show, which is set to release on the streamer in late 2021. The character in the comics is directly connected to Captain Marvel (hence the similar name), and it’s possible Ms. Marvel will include a few clues and story details that will then be further addressed in Captain Marvel 2. The Disney+ series will more than likely reveal why and how exactly Kamala will become embroiled in Carol Danvers’ next mission. The MCU is known to set things up in advance and it could be that Ms. Marvel will include a post-credits scene that will explain the young superhero’s involvement in the sequel.
