Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter may have gotten their happy ending in Avengers: Endgame, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have some explaining to do first. Captain America’s relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D. founder Peggy Carter started with Captain America: The First Avenger and kicked off a romance for the ages. The two meet when Peggy recruits Steve for the super-soldier initiative and fall in love throughout the course of the film. However, their new relationship is cut tragically short when Steve seemingly dies crashing into the Arctic.
Following the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy goes to the United States and works for the S.S.R. Those years of her life are chronicled in the ABC series Agent Carter, as well as the Marvel One-Shot of the same name. She also pops up in various other Marvel films, such as Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron. After living a long, full life, she dies in Captain America: Civil War and kicks off Steve’s arc in that movie. However, in Avengers: Endgame, Steve makes the choice to stay in the past and live out his life with Peggy, returning to the present as an old man.
In an interview with IGN, Atwell weighed in on whether Steve might have told her character about the kiss he shared with her great-niece, Sharon Carter, in Captain America: Civil War. Atwell said, “Probably, in a very awkward way, that probably meant there was a domestic. Words were said, voices may have risen.” However, she also thinks that it wouldn’t have been a dealbreaker for the two, elaborating, “Wouldn’t that be hilarious? If they had a proper argument about it and she just slams the door and he goes off fishing for the weekend or something, I don’t know.” Atwell also believes that the scene would be humorous rather than dramatic, saying, “Because it’s the ’40s I think it can have such a beautiful, wholesome, kind of screwball comedy tone to it, rather than a soap opera.”
Though Peggy may be fine with it, Steve and Sharon’s relationship is controversial within the MCU. Many question the ick factor of Steve kissing his former love’s great-niece, especially because Sharon had a close relationship with her Aunt Peggy. Sharon and Steve have appeared in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War together. They cross paths in the first movie when Sharon is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent posing as Steve’s neighbor. Then, in Captain America: Civil War, the two grow closer when Sharon supports Steve’s position on the Sokovia Accords, before finally sealing the deal. Sharon hasn’t been seen in the MCU since, though she will appear in the upcoming Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
Though Peggy and Steve’s reunion in Avengers: Endgame is an undoubtedly nice moment, it raised some questions as well. For one, the directors and writers of the movie disagree on whether Steve and Peggy’s life together occurred in the original timeline or an alternate one. The writers of the film, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, believe that Steve didn’t change the original timeline and he was always Peggy’s husband. They’re also of the mind that Steve fathered Peggy’s two children. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo think Steve created a “branched reality” when he stayed behind with Peggy.
Regardless of what timeline Steve shared the information about Sharon in, Atwell’s opinion that Peggy wouldn’t have minded too much jives with what we know about her character. Peggy doesn’t take things sitting down, but she’s generous enough to forgive and forget when the situation calls for it. It’s nice to think of the two characters laughing about Steve’s fling with Sharon instead of making a big issue of it. After spending so much time apart, Peggy and Steve wouldn’t want to waste time arguing, which makes their moment in Avengers: Endgame that much sweeter.
