This is a historic day in the history of both Captain America and the Incredible Hulk in the pages of Marvel’s magic. Even before the two Avengers meet leading their respective teams for the team-up/crossover series Avengers/Defenders: Tarot, the two beings have become one. In completely inexplicable fashion.

The inexplicable part of the equation is easily understood, since the twist arrives in the official preview pages for Tarot #1, set to arrive in your local comic shop on January 1st. So whatever the explanation for Steve Rogers’ transformation into the Hulk may be, it’s likely to be tied up in the story from Alan Davis and Paul Renaud. A story uniting both the Avengers and Defenders for a mission mired in magic. And now, the true extent may have been revealed to span time itself, not just believability.

The official preview sends Captain America and his original, wartime Invaders – Steve, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and the original Human Torch – into pursuit of Oberführer Okkulte, the head of Hitler’s ‘Mystical Research Division.’ A man blessed with the ability to charm inanimate objects into defending him, and choosing to pass that power onto stone statues capable of swarming the heroes. Which is right when the unbelievable twist occurs. The coming months have already promised Marvel fans that Hulk is the next Spider-Man, but he’s also the new Captain America, too. Take a look at the official preview for Tarot #1 below:

The science behind Captain America’s transformation into the Hulk is a total twist, not expected before Avengers/Defenders: Tarot #4! How it relates to the seemingly magical (mystical?) enchantments being placed on the statues by Oberführer Okkulte is a mystery readers weren’t expecting to solve. But one thing is for sure: Steve Rogers is massive and green, and no statue will stand a chance against the power of the Hulk – no matter who wields it. The synopsis for Avengers/Defenders: Tarot #3 promised some of the “most unbelievable Marvel characters” readers can imagine, and that has taken on a whole new meaning in light of this preview. Find the full credits and details below, before picking up the full issue on January 1st, 2020.
