The Jordan Peele-produced Candyman reimagining is looking to add If Beale Street Could Talk actress Teyonah Parris. After his breakout and Oscar-winning horror film Get Out, Peele has become one of the most sought after talents in Hollywood. His directorial follow-up Us hits theaters in just a few weeks, while his reboot of The Twilight Zone will debut on CBS All Access at the beginning of April. Among the many projects he’s become attached to, Candyman is the latest to pick up steam.

Nia DaCosta was hired to direct the “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 original film starring Tony Todd late last year, and it didn’t take too long before reports of possible casting decisions began to surface. The film is now close to landing its star, with Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently revealed to be in talks for the lead role, an artist who becomes obsessed with the legend of Candyman.

In a new report from THR, they’ve revealed that Parris is now in talks to join the film. She most recently starred in Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning If Beale Street Could Talk as the sister of the main character Tish (KiKi Layne). If she does join the remake, Parris will play the girlfriend of Mateen, who is an art dealer in Chicago. Parris has previously appeared on episodes of Empire and Mad Men, as well as Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq in the lead role and Dear White People.

Joining Candyman will keep Parris’ involved with some of the most prominent filmmakers in Hollywood. After already working with Spike Lee and Barry Jenkins, the possibility of adding Peele and a rising director like DaCosta to her resume would be quite impressive. The pairing of her and Mateen would also give Candyman two leads that are rising through the industry and, if it turns out well, could be what makes them household names.

Parris and Mateen are just the first few names who will likely be seen in Candyman, but there’s still plenty of other roles left to fill. There were previously rumors that Lakeith Stanfield was being eyed for a role, although it is unclear if that was for the same leading role that Mateen may be getting. But, even though Todd has mixed feelings over the new movie as a whole, the original star has also said that he’d like to have a role in this new Candyman. With production beginning later this year, it shouldn’t be too much longer before more news on the film arrives.
