A remastered version of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sans multiplayer could be on the way if a recent ratings listing is to be believed. The news lines up with a March 2018 rumor that such a game was in the works. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time something like this has occurred. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare received a similar facelift in 2016 (albeit with its multiplayer intact) when Activision included it with special editions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
Modern Warfare 2 serves as the follow-up to the now-iconic Call of Duty 4. The campaign continues the previous game’s story of Roach and Task Force 141, who must combat a Russian invasion. It received widespread acclaim for its story and multiplayer, and is generally considered among the best shooters of the era. The game also garnered a fair amount of controversy for its infamous “No Russian” mission. In it, the player, in the role of a CIA spy infiltrating the enemy force, must engage in an airport shooting massacring dozens of unarmed civilians.
Evidence of the remaster comes from a PEGI 18 board rating for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. Destructoid, who first reported the news, snagged a screencap of said listing. Don’t bother searching for the alleged game on the site now as doing so yields no results. That means someone somewhere had the listing taken down. If the game exists, it makes for an intriguing shift from the multiplayer-only Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (now with loot boxes) to a campaign-only entry, remaster or not.
Now, 2019’s Call of Duty title is slated to come from Infinity Ward. Whatever it is, it’s been rumored to be quite an ambitious project. It seems very plausible that Activision would repeat the same tactic it employed with Infinite Warfare three years ago. Hopefully players won’t have to wait months to purchase Modern Warfare 2 standalone. Regardless, losing out on improved versions of the game’s famed Spec Ops mode and the rest of its multiplayer could be a deal-breaker for some fans.
The only question bigger than the game’s potential lack of multiplayer is whether or not the remaster will still feature No Russian in its original state. The infamous segment was highly questionable a decade ago. Resurrecting it today, when shootings have, unfortunately, occurred far more frequently, could open a can of worms even messier than back then. With E3 just three months away, it shouldn’t be long before we get confirmation on this title one way or the other.
