A very special guest star is headed to Brooklyn Nine-Nine this season in the form of Lin-Manuel Miranda. The acclaimed police procedural/sitcom, which aired on FOX for its first five seasons, was shockingly canceled by the network in May 2018, only to be picked up by NBC less than 24 hours later. After a bit of a delay, Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 began airing in January, picking up exactly where it left off.
The series, which features an ensemble cast including Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Cruz, and many more, was created by Mike Schur, who is behind many other popular NBC sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation and The Good Place. Upon news of its cancelation, both the cast and fans took to social media to express their disappointment, and to push for another network to pick it up. Among those fans was Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Now, two worlds will collide when Miranda guest stars on the show he helped to save. TVLine reports that Miranda will appear on Brooklyn Nine-Nine in an upcoming episode. Miranda will portray the brother of Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), David. The episode is titled “The Golden Child,” and will air on March 7. TVLine & EW also shared exclusive images featuring Miranda, Fumero, and Samberg (who plays Amy’s co-worker and husband, Jake Peralta).
Miranda’s guest spot on the show comes many months after the idea was first floated. Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor had expressed a desire to have Miranda and others (such as Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill) who supported the show make guest appearances, calling them the “Guardians of the Nine-Nine.” There’s no word yet on whether Hamill will appear in a future episode, but it looks like the opportunity is there for him.
Given the title of the episode in question, Miranda’s David could be a foil to his sister. Amy is known around the precinct as being an overachiever and perfectionist, and this look into her family dynamics could reveal more about how she became that way. Amy’s parents, Victor and Camila, appeared season 5’s Thanksgiving episode “Two Turkeys,” and between her mom’s passive aggression and her dad’s controlling nature, it’s anyone’s guess what David will be like.
Miranda’s role could also open the door to more family cameos in the future. Jake is known to have multiple half-siblings, a fact that offers a world of possibilities. Though their dynamic at work hasn’t really changed since becoming husband and wife, the official joining of the Peralta and Santiago families has endless potential for future hijinks.
