Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2 episode 13 saw Jake struggle to keep a secret for Terry. Before Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Andy Samberg was best known for being one-third of The Lonely Island comedy group and his time on Saturday Night Live. Brooklyn Nine-Nine debuted on Fox in 2013 and cast Samberg as Jake Peralta, a great cop who also happens to be fairly immature and childish. He’s grown up as the show has evolved and it became an audience favorite due to the comic chemistry of its cast.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine was briefly canceled following its fifth season but soon found a new home on NBC, with its seventh season debuting in 2020. The show has seen its share of great guest stars over the years too, including Bill Hader, Adam Sandler - as himself - Sterling K. Brown and even Marshawn Lynch. The showrunners still want to bring in Bruce Willis to pay off Jake’s Die Hard obsession, which has yet to come to pass.
The second series saw the show improve on what worked in season 1 and put more of a focus on its talented ensemble. Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2 episode 13 “Payback” sees Jake become suspicious when Terry demand he pays him back all the money he owes - over $2000, in fact - and he does a little digging. He soon realizes Terry and his wife are expecting a new child, and in addition to repaying the money he owes, Jake wants to be the godfather. Terry agrees to think about this if Jake keeps it quiet.
This proves challenging, as the rest of the precinct is wondering why Jake is suddenly paying back the money, and they call in the debts he owes them too. Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 2 episode 13 sees Jake work hard to keep his word, cleaning Rosa’s bike and giving Scully a deep massage. It’s all for naught when he accidentally emails baby name suggestions to the entire precinct. With the secret out, Jake has to distract Terry by agreeing to a painful workout session to buy the team some time to delete the email from Terry’s computer.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s b-plot sees Holt and Amy team up to investigate an old case, only for Holt to essentially solve it on his own. They still drive out to look into the culprit, only for Holt to receive diarrhea from a sandwich Amy buys him while attempting to bond. The team later succeed in deleting Jake’s incriminating email, only for an unaware Holt to congratulate Terry anyway. Terry is naturally angry but later realizes Jake made a mistake and the efforts he’s gone through to prove his responsibility - including selling his beloved car - prove he’d make a good godfather.
