Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) star Margot Robbie would love to see Poison Ivy join the DCEU. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have a strong and complex friendship/romance that has been covered in depth in the comic books and related cartoons, but their relationship has never been explored on the big screen.
Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn first officially met in Batman: The Animated Series after Harley and the Joker have broken up. In what appears to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship the two lady criminals meet while trying to rob the same museum at the same time. The partners in crime become roommates, with Poison Ivy saving Harley countless times during her abusive on/off relationship with the Joker. One major example was when Poison Ivy injected Harley with the chemical that gave Harley the same resistance to toxins that made Ivy so powerful. Margot Robbie has been passionate about trying to get Poison Ivy to join the DCEU for several years.
In an interview with CBR, Margot Robbie relayed her excitement over the potential of a Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn reunion in a future film in the DCEU. Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey film set to premiere in February, and also served as a producer on the film. Check out her thoughts on a potential Poison Ivy/Harley Quinn reunion below.
While the main plot details of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) are still somewhat a mystery, the feminist spirit the film evokes even in just the trailers and promotional material is delightfully colorful and contagious. Harley Quinn gets her own band of female anti-heroes in the film, and declares her independence after her break up with the Joker. Though producers for the film have said Birds of Prey won’t be a heavy handed message about female empowerment, but rather an exploration of complex and flawed women who don’t apologize for who they are. (Even the “Emancipation,” in the title will mean more than the audience thinks.) Although Robbie’s comments on still longing for a Poison Ivy/Harley Quinn reunion indicate that the red haired criminal may have yet to make an appearance, her presence in a follow up film would surely drum up anticipation for what would surely be one of the most exciting matchups in the DCEU. After all, a great way to evoke female empowerment is to present different types of women interacting with each other, toxins and all.
“I’ve been pushing a Poison Ivy reunion for a long time…Because obviously Ivy and Harley have such an incredible relationship, so I would love to explore that.”
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2020 for a reason. Not only will fans get to see the return of the beloved and beautifully flawed Harley Quinn once again portrayed masterfully by Margot Robbie, but the movie will introduce a whole cast of new female anti-heroes that deserve their own spotlight. Hopefully Poison Ivy will be up next.
